I really like this player. It sounds great and has plenty of nice capabilities. I tried programming an app for it too, and it’s easy to do if you know a little programming. The player is not perfect, however, but it gets close enough. (1) The Creative Centrale software is not great, especially the version that came with the player’s set up. (2) The earphone jack is touchy. Contrary to intuition, you can’t push it all the way in because you lose the stereo connection. (3) The earphone plug sticks out prominently from the player, and could be a point of damage if your not careful I think, because, if wiggled a little, it loses connection or part of the stereo signal. (4) It seems to only be available in black right now.
At its core the ZEN X-Fi2 utilizes some of Creative’s magic in at its heart. For the folks that own a SoundBlaster X-Fi or are familiar with the lineage of Creative you know that this enables the ZEN player a massive edge over some of the other comparable players in terms of audio quality and sound shaping capability. The D-to-A on this device is well executed, the on-board amplifier is capable, and the sound shaping/customization is second to none in my opinion. That was the good… now the bad: the user interface of this device is so bad it’ll have you ripping your hair out in a day or two, and in my opinion is bad enough to be a show-stopper on an otherwise very capable device. I knew this before my purchase and really thought I could live with it, but I was wrong. At the heart of it’s problems are the 3-punch knockout combo of 1) resistive touchscreen panel design decision, 2) poorly laid out interface structure and 3) slow device reaction time.An example: You’re listening to the player and want to turn the volume up. You touch the screen, and more often than not the touch is not registered/missed… you tap the screen again, maybe a few more times, and the screen awakens which is denoted by slowly rising in brightness. You can visibly see this rise in display in brightness as 2 to 4 coarse redraws of the display during which the device will not respond to you. Once the menu is drawn screen you then tap on the speaker icon on the left side of the display (if it registers on the first tap) a slider for the volume appears to the right of the display…. Move your thumb over to the right and then try to adjust the volume. Trying to move the slider is a hit and miss, especially if you don’t have tiny fingers. Things are even more frustrating when a track starts playing. If you decide to go to a different part of the track you’ll embark on another series of clicks and missed responses. Also, if the track has just begun playing the seek cursor is not visible so you can’t seek on the track for a few seconds. Then there is the speaker… a nice touch if you can’t use the device with headphones, but has anyone figured out how to shut it off (permanently)? Plug in a headset, go in to the settings, turn off the speaker, listen to a track, unplug the headset… and bam! Speaker comes back on again. The interface is riddled with these sorts of oddities. While the sound is superior to many portable media players out there, the neolithic resistive touch panel + interface menu structure negates the audio benefit in my opinion. If you do end up buying one, I would suggest taking the advice of one of the reviewers below which was to use a stylus with this device. It helps to a certain extent. At a minimum, my advice for Creative is:1) Provide an option for the user to disable the fades/slides/etc from the user interface. The device is too slow to do any real UI animation, it just frustrates the user on this device.2) Increase the size of on-screen elements so that it can be operated effectively by human fingers.3) Allow for permanent disabling of the internal speaker.4) All for volume control at the top layer of navigation menu, better yet allow the user to disable the playback display (and leave the device in the control menu while playing audio)5) Slide-interfaces don’t work well with a resistive panel (in my opinion) and frustrate the user. The UI should allow for transitions from screen to screen with a large button control structure on the edges. And for wish-list improvements, it would be nice to have:1) Pass-code lockout of the device to prevent unauthorized use/playback2) Portrait display mode (more natural when holding in one hand)3) Hardware buttons for volume
I got a Zen X-Fi2 in October of 2009. It was dead by December. The screen freezes up and no longer takes commands. I sent it back to Amazon, and ordered a second as Amazon was kind enough to offer e refund. The second arrived in January and froze up dead in May. Contacted Creative, got a RMA, sent it in and I called today August 3rd to get the status of the repair. Because the unit cheap paint had chipped off with normal wear and tear they indicated the unit was damaged and that voided the warranty. I will never buy another Creative device, ever. the software is unwieldy, the quality of the product sucks, and the customer service is even worse.
The touchscreen display the primary feature for which it is being promoted performs really bad. I’d rather call it punch screen, that’s how hard it is to use. The X-fi crystallizer feature is really good which enhances the sound clarity very well. Build quality of the plastic back is poor. For a player this expensive I would rather get something with wi-fi capability. This player does not have wi-fi which is not worth the price you pay. It does not recognize most avi files. The videos do not play properly, it keeps breaking up or the system hangs all of a sudden while watching videos. Overall the Zen X fi2 is really overpriced for the features you get, the only plus is the audio clarity nothing else is good.
Just worked one day, then the white screen. really bad, I think creative is no longer the same, defective product and I am very angry.LATINOAMERICA: No tengo idea como es su experiencia de creative, es la primera vez que compro y me llevo la gran decepcion, arruinado en 1 dia, muy defectuoso, lo voy a devolver y espero no toparme con mas CREATIVE, han bajado su calidad, ya no son lo mismo.
I’m not an audio file by any means. I’ve never owned a iPod or Zune. I’ve only bought creative products.Pro: Sounds great. Really nice ear-buds. I usually buy a better set of headphones when I buy a mp3 player, but these are very nice. I don’t think I’ll be upgrading. Very light weight and easily fits in a shirt pocket or pants pocket. The screen is very easy to see. The colors are vibrant.Cons: The buttons are not intuitive. I don’t know who thought of button pad on the right, but they are not clearly marked. You have to look hard to see the symbols on them. Once I read the instructions they started to make more sense, but by design anyone should be able to pick it up and figure it out. This is design 101. I’m guessing all the good design people got snapped up by Apple and MS. Battery life seems to drain fast, but I don’t know what the industry standard is. I was hoping the battery would last for at least 48 hours, but my first charge last about 10 with the base boost on and equalizer on and an turned up to about 2/3 volume. Also, be warned the 8 gig model DOES NOT come with wifi. I must have read 16 gig description by mistake. But no big deal. The only think the wifi does is allow you to stream music from your laptop. If you could download songs that would be a different story. Seems like my cons list is longer than my pros list. Don’t get me wrong. For playing music, this is a good buy and nice little mp3 player.
I’ve had this device for about a month. The sound is excellent, all they brag about and more, and the headphones that come with are surprisingly good-quality also. Radio reception is also superb. It holds a lot and the battery lasts fairly well. My only problem so far is that it freezes up for no apparent reason–usually after I’ve done something apparently innocuous like pressed the button for the next track. It resets fine when you stick a paperclip into the reset button, but makes me a little nervous. Still, on the whole, exactly what I wanted.
A few months ago, my ipod touch was stolen. I don’t want to buy another one because they are so expensive and I am considering buying an iphone when it comes to verizon (January). I need a new phone anyway because mine is about 4 years old (ENV 1), has had water damage, dropped, diminished quality, and everything else that happens to old phones. For now, I want a cheap MP3 Player. I looked online for the apple iPods and saw the ipod nano which looked nice but saw that it is priced at around $150. This was one of or the cheapest MP3 player with a screen (I don’t want a shuffle). After seeing this, I looked around for other products from different companies that had the features that I wanted for a cheaper price.I bought this item for $70. The things that I was looking for in an MP3 player were:-Built in speaker-Alarm Function-Compatibility with iTunes-Screen-Small Size & Weight-Under $100This player had all of these features. The speaker quality is really nice. This player also has FM Radio. To use the radio, you have to put the headphones in to listen and find stations. From where I am, I can get 6 Channels but the MP3 Player allows 32 Presets. The X-Fi feature changes the sound a little in the speaker to make it sound live. To enhance these settings, you are supposed to put headphones on. The headphones that come with this player are good quality and comfortable. There is also a microphone which I have tested and found it works and is easy to use. There are also some equalizer settings which I have used.Problems: I had a few minor problems, but some are just my fault and me not thinking.1. I have a Mac and a slot drive. READ THE DIRECTIONS. I put the small cd into the mac and it wouldn’t come out. I later read in the directions that I should download the software online if I have a slot drive. After going to the Apple Store and getting the cd removed for free, I went home and used a windows computer in my house to download the software. Again this is not Creative’s fault, this is mine, and I don’t want anyone else to go through these problems.2. I’m not a huge fan of the software on the computer. Some of my music does’nt transfer to the software and I’m currently trying to find the way to transfer the rest. All of my music is bought off of itunes and the software picks up most of it from my computer’s library. I am pretty good with technology but not as good with windows than I am with Mac. Conclusion:This is a very nice MP3 Player which is a great buy at it’s cheap price. Plenty of space, looks nice, and very light. Though I had a few difficulties, it is still very worth the two hours that I spent setting it up. For windows users, this shouldn’t take you more than hour maybe even half that time.
This is the second set of Creative EP-630 headphones I’ve bought in the last 90 days – I attributed the early demise of the first pair to a factory problem or maybe over-use…the same thing happened with the second pair after less than 30 days – the right earbud sound is diminished by about 50%, then it completely dies. Will think twice about purchasing Creative products in the future.
+ Great all around sound. Unless you’re a sound engineer I’ll doubt you’ll find much difference between this and much, much more expensive headphones. + Surprisingly powerful bass+ Fit into ears perfectly; very comfortable+ Pretty durable. The material of the cord refuses to kink, which is great+ Surprisingly good noise-cancellation + PRICEYep, can’t come up with many cons to this product. At the price, it’s almost too good to be true.
This is a great product for the money. Sound is terrific. I gave a 3 star for durability when my cat easily chewed thru the very thin wires.
